Sleep Away the Pounds
Hormones, sleep, it’s all about sleep, and studies prove it! That’s what Sleep Away wants you to believe.
In fact, Sleep Away pushes it pretty desperately, trying to make you believe that you can literally sleep away the pounds. Have you ever taken a sleeping pill, prescription or natural? Did you magically drop even 10 pounds?

But to be fair, there are studies that show that even 1 hour of missed sleep makes a huge difference. Women who miss even 1 hour of sleep are about 30% more likely to be overweight or obese. Miss 3 hours and the numbers keep going up. Some blame the stress hormone cortisol, though there are certainly plenty of explanations. Still, it can’t all be sleep.
Obviously, there’s no possible way that scientists could objectively measure the diet and exercise habits of the subjects. Subjects did not live in the labs for 16 years (that was the length of the study), people are by nature liars, and even people who don’t lie tend to overestimate activity levels and underestimate how many calories they actually eat.
With this in mind, Sleep Away does recommend that readers keep turkey on hand, which logically is a lower fat meat. If you’re eating more of that and less steak, hamburger, pork, etc., then logically you might lose weight.
If you cut out sugar and caffeine like again Sleep Away suggests, then you cut out soda and a lot of other high calorie foods. Sounds pretty good. It’s a small change, and you’d probably lose about 10 pounds. But 10 pounds is 10 pounds.
Beyond this, Sleep Away really doesn’t give you anything particularly revolutionary. The tips in the Sleep Away book may help you to sleep. But somebody else already tried this, the idea of better sleep without any fat burners or other weight loss supplements. Actually, a few products tried it, all of which were based on the idea of cortisol. And we all know how well that turned out (i.e. FTC lawsuit).
Conclusion
In short, if you really want to lose weight, this isn’t the place to start. Sleep Away sounds good. But that’s about all it does. If you want a real diet plan that will really help you to lose weight, there are plenty. If you want the Sleep Away effect, you can save your money and just stop drinking lattes, coffee, and soda.
